Sometimes we don’t have the inspiration to write. It happens that we look for it all around us, and when we find it, it is still not enough. We need to possess some other skills to be a good writer.

How to write like Hemingway

Brian Clark, founder of Copyblogger, wrote an interesting article on how to write like Hemingway. We have all heard of Ernest Hemingway and at least one of his most famous books – The Old Man and the Sea . In an article Brian wrote for Copyblogger , he explains why you should write like Hemingway in the first place.

The word that best describes Hemingway’s writing style is – concise!

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, succinct is defined as compact, precise expression, without wasted words. Anyone who wants to write like Hemingway should avoid long explanations and vague sentences or phrases.

5 rules that teach you how to write as well as Hemingway

  1. Use short sentences

Hemingway knew how to hit the point! He was known for his minimalist writing style without the use of adjectives. Once they challenged him to tell a whole story in just 6 words. He succeeded in that, and the story read like this: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

  1. Use short introductions

Short introductions are more readable and easier to understand. When the introduction is short, it must contain the point and that is what will keep the reader’s attention.

  1. Use “powerful” words

Energetic words are those that come from passion, focus and intention.

  1. Be positive

It is known that Hemingway was not exactly the most cheerful man in the world. So what does it mean when it says “be positive”? Basically, when you write, you should say what something is , rather than what it isn’t. For example, instead of saying “this product is not expensive”, you can say “this product is economical”. Or instead of – “this procedure is painless”, say – “this procedure is relatively comfortable”.

  1. Never have only 4 rules

Brian Clark, author of How to Write Like Hemingway concludes by adding – Hemingway actually had 4 rules of writing, but I had to dig a little deeper for this fifth rule and here’s what I found. Hemingway once said: “I write one page that is worthy of a masterpiece, out of 99 pages that are worth nothing.” I try to throw those pages that are not well written in the garbage.”
