Google Search Console adds support for regular expressions and better data filtering in the Performance section. Google apparently decided to improve this tool with a series of changes it made in GSC recently and provide users with better quality reports and data. In previous articles, we wrote about changes in the Index Coverage report -in adding the Associations option .

Google has announced a few more improvements to the performance report in Google Search Console . Improvements include regular expression support in performance report filters, and the data comparison mode has also improved its filtering. Site owners can now use Search Console to filter data using regular expressions , as well as use a redesigned comparison method that supports more than one metric.

What is a regular expression?

Regular expressions were announced as a novelty in Search Console a year ago. Regular expression is a way to search and replace strings of words or characters. They will help create more complex queries and filters based on the page.

To use the new Regex filter , you can create a query as follows, select the button Performance – New – Query – and select Custom (Regex) from the drop-down menu.

An example Google provided for using the new option was: “let’s say your company is called ‘ cats and dogs ‘, but it’s sometimes abbreviated to ‘ cats & dogs ‘ or even ‘ c & d ‘.” You can use a regex filter to catch all your branded queries by defining the regex filter: cats and dogs | cats & dogs | c & d .

You can learn more about using regular expressions in GSC here.

If you have already used the compare option ( Compare), you noticed that the table did not contain a column for comparison.

From now on, the compare mode fully supports cases when more than one indicator is selected, and the interface has been improved to make it easier to view those results side-by-side. In this way, the area available for the data table is almost doubled. In addition, compare mode now supports a new regex filter for queries and pages.
