After listening to feedback from creators and marketers , YouTube announced several updates to its Advertiser-Friendly Content Guidelines that it says will allow more content to become eligible for full monetization. This practically means that YouTube is extending full monetization to more types of content.

YouTube extends full monetization

YouTube is expanding full monetization as indicated by the green icon in YouTube Studio. Creators who are part of the YouTube Partner Program can immediately determine whether a video is eligible for full or partial monetization by viewing the color-coded icons in YouTube Studio.

  • Green Icon – The video is eligible for full monetization.
  • Yellow icon – The video will show limited or no ads.
  • Red icon – Video is not eligible for monetization.
  • Gray icon – Monetization has been manually turned off by the creator.

Full monetization extends to content that contains ” violent interactions with law enforcement, recreational drugs, and drug-related content or sensitive events ” — though only when those videos are used for educational, news or documentary purposes. Previously, these types of videos were not eligible for full monetization.

Furthermore, YouTube expands its monetization around controversial issues, where the content is not a specific image, but an objective discussion of controversial issues. Then in the area of adult topics that are provided in the context of humor. YouTube said it will allow monetization on videos that discuss adult topics when ” delivered in the context of humor ,” as well as on videos that contain the use of moderate profanity in the first 30 seconds of the video. Before that, using obscene words in the first 30 seconds of a video could lead to demonetization.

YouTube says it has met with advertisers to make the case for some responsible content policy updates. This means that there will now be more opportunities for content creators to fully monetize their content, whereas previously some of this content would have received a yellow icon.

Certain content areas are moved out of the yellow icon range and into the green icon range. The changes will be applied to those types of content that we mentioned earlier in the text.
