What is Flat Design?

Flat design is another graphic design trend that essentially originated as a striving towards minimalism . This direction in graphic design gained its popularity thanks to Google , Windows and IOS , that is, the tendency of users to search for an “environment” with which they are familiar. In this text, we will try to explain what flat design is, as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

What is flat design and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Simply put, Flat design is, as the name suggests, combining two-dimensional graphic elements with striking colors without the use of lights, shadows, reflections, textures, plans and other 3d elements.

What are the advantages of flat design?

Compatibility

Due to its simplicity of application of graphic elements, flat design is considered ” user friendly ” and can easily be adapted to different formats and screen sizes, so it is no wonder that it is most often used in web design and mobile application design.

Geometric shapes, icons, images or typography are graphic elements that are easy to organize, move and scale to create a harmonious composition.

In this way, it is easier for designers to adapt the design to the content and not the content to the design.

Typography

Flat design is also characterized by clean and legible typography. Simple and modern fonts without shadows, decorations and other effects help users to follow the text more easily and focus on the content and not on the form.

In flat design, sans-serif fonts are more often used, but this does not have to be the rule. Serif fonts can be very effective for use in headlines or text that we want to emphasize.

Although flat design is quite popular and practical, you should not always insist on it because it also has its drawbacks.

Disadvantages of flat design

Functionality

In an effort to make the design original, designers often make the mistake of neglecting functionality, the so-called ” overdesign “. For example, there may be a lack of visual hierarchy, or that important functions are not easily visible, and that parts of the text are not legible. All this can confuse users so that they lose interest in a website or application, no matter how attractive it is to the eye.

Originality and authenticity

On the other hand, avoiding the above-mentioned shortcomings can lead to the design not being original and interesting or reminiscent of something that has already been seen. This is also not a good solution because it is authenticity that sets the brand apart from the rest.

That is why the principles of flat design should be well studied before each project and the shortcomings turned into advantages in order to attract the attention of new users and justify the trust of existing users.

Try to make the brand recognizable on the market by designing icons or infographics , choosing colors , typography , images or transitions on the site.

As flat design has been around for a long time, marketers and designers have adapted the style to cover the flaws by introducing some of the forbidden elements such as shadows or plans but so that they are in the nature of flat design.

By exploring flat design in your work, make an effort to design each element with an aspiration towards minimalism and without superfluous details so that you are focused on users and functionality to provide a unique and recognizable interface.

Keep in mind that Flat design is not a rule that should be strictly adhered to, but a trend that has been going on for a long time, so it can already be called a style that is easily adapted to new technologies such as NFT.
