Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an unstoppable force in the creative industry, redefining graphic design…
Basically, graphic designers create visual (graphic) solutions to improve brand communication with the target group through typography, images, colors and shapes. However, if we were to look at the bigger picture, we would hardly be able to define graphic design so simply, because it is constantly expanding and developing. That’s why there are basic types of graphic design that differ in approach, that is, the way of thinking when creating graphic content. In this text, we will try to explain how to distinguish between them and thus help you determine the designer or agency that will be most suitable for your next project.
Types of graphic design
If you were to skip effective methods: “I know the right person for you!” or “The neighbor’s kid is doing that design”, you should start from the fact that each type of graphic design requires certain skills and knowledge, and therefore not all designers are equally good at creating materials for different types of designs.
Logo design and visual identity
We have already discussed the design of logos and visual identity as separate topics, and these types involve creating a recognizable “signature” of the brand through images, shapes and colors, by which customers or clients will easily distinguish your brand from others.
The logo must be clear regardless of the size or distance from which it is viewed, and at the same time be easy to remember.
Visual identity design is the creation of a series of guidelines for how the brand is presented and in which direction it will develop, without deviating from the basic idea. This type of design requires a sense of visual communication as well as conceptual and creative skills in working with vectors, i.e. vector graphics. Researching industries, organizations, trends and competitors provides essential information for further work.

Advertising (Marketing and advertising)
On the other hand, if by the design of logos and visual identity we mean mainly work with vector graphics, then we can freely say that designers who see their specialization in advertising mostly work with bitmaps. You can read more about the difference between vector graphics and bitmaps in the topic How to prepare for printing .
Content marketing and advertising designers generally work with business owners and marketing professionals to create a marketing strategy tool. Because of this, deadlines are often short, so less attention is paid to creative work, and much more to visual hierarchy and transparency.

It happens that designers work on such projects as freelancers , but more often you will meet them as part of a creative team. Previously, designers mainly directed promotion to printed media such as billboards, posters, advertisements in newspapers or magazines, and the like. However, more and more often, with the development of digital technologies, this branch has expanded to include digital marketing , that is, advertising via the Internet and social networks.
WEB design
Web design, or UX and UI design, is the creation of content with the help of which the user interacts with the device or application. The focus of this type of design is to create an interface so that the website or application is first of all easy to use.
Designers rely on the user’s visual experience and design the graphic elements and their arrangement on the screen. The task of a web designer is to balance aesthetic appeal and technical functionality.
UI designers specialize in creating desktops, mobile applications and web applications, but they also have to be team players because they mainly collaborate with UX designers who determine the functionality of the website or application. That’s why people often don’t distinguish between UI and UX design.
In addition to graphical applications for UI and UX design, they need knowledge of programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Publications
Publications are traditionally printed media. Publication design is the classic and probably the oldest type of design, at least as far as books and newspapers are concerned, and later magazines and catalogs. However, with the development of digital technologies, graphic designers began to apply these techniques in digital publishing as well.
Graphic designers in publishing work with editors and publishing houses on page breaks and typography while a bit more creative freedom includes photography, graphics and illustrations.

Packaging design
Packaging design communicates directly with consumers, and whether it’s boxes, bottles, cans or bags, packaging is a marketing tool for the entire brand. Besides the importance of attracting attention, the packaging serves to protect the product and facilitate easier storage, distribution and sale.
Packaging designers are much more dedicated to the creation of concepts and mock-ups, so it is not surprising that they need expert knowledge of prepress and a good understanding of industrial design and production. Since it is a specific product of a brand, designers have the opportunity, not to say forced, to create photos, illustrations and visual identity related to that product.

Graphic designers in this type of design are required to be flexible and accept market demands and trends.
To conclude, graphic design is a growing field and new types of design are constantly being developed, such as motion graphics and the gaming industry. New technologies open up new markets, so there is an increasing demand for specialized and qualified designers.
