When you read the title of our new blog, the first thing that probably comes to mind is tracking the site’s current position on search engines for specific keywords or phrases. Actually the answer to the question of how to track keywords can have several solutions. What we will actually focus on in the text is how to track the keywords that brought users to your website . What is it that they are searching for that made your content appear as an adequate answer to their query.
This information can be of great importance so that you can evaluate the quality of content on the site, which parts meet the needs of users , and which parts of your content require work on them or maybe even be permanently removed from the site.
Keywords are phrases that users type into search engines to find the content they are looking for. In this text, we will show you how to easily see the keywords that people use when they come to your website .
What is keyword tracking and why is it important?
Keyword tracking is basically the activity of tracking your site’s position for specific keywords in search engines like Google , Bing , etc.
Keyword tracking helps you see important metrics like what keywords people are using to find your site, so you can focus on the content and key phrases that bring traffic to your site.
When it comes to optimizing WordPress sites, users are advised to do keyword research and add appropriate keywords to their site. This helps your site rank in search engines.
But what many beginners don’t know is that search rankings change quite often. If you are not constantly up to date with changes and constantly work on improving your content, you can easily lose the positions you previously had, and therefore the traffic on the site. Google algorithm updates can often cause your pages to rank higher or lower for certain keywords. When you know exactly how (through which queries and keywords) people find and use your site, you can much more easily create a strategy and strive to maintain and improve search engine positions.
How do you track the keywords people use to find your site?
The best way to track the keywords people are using is with Google Search Console .
Google Search Console is a free tool provided by Google to help site owners monitor and maintain the presence of their pages in Google search results. If you haven’t already done so, you need to add your site to Google Search Console . You can read about how to do it here.
Once you add a website to Google Search Console , you’ll be able to use it to monitor your search listings. To review the positions of your keywords, click on Performance , and in the lower part of the screen, all those phrases that were used in the search, which brought users to the site, will be listed.
You can also look at your keyword rankings in Google Analytics. Simply log into your Google Analytics dashboard and go to Acquisitions » Search Console » Queries . The search keywords will be listed in the search query column. For each keyword, you will also see its CTR, number of impressions and average position.
Another way to access this data is with the Monster Insights plugin . MonsterInsights is a Google Analytics plugin for WordPress . It allows you to easily install Google Analytics in WordPress and shows you reports that can be read from within your WordPress dashboard. The advantage of this method is that all data will be available to you within the WordPress dashboard. Make sure your Google Analytics is linked to Google Search Console .
