Google Search Console is a collection of tools and resources that help website owners, webmasters, and SEO professionals track a site’s performance in the Google search index. This is a free service that allows you to find out a lot of information about the site itself and the people who visit it. Search Console is Google’s main and official way of communicating with website owners.
By registering an account, Google can send webmasters information about problems, errors, or even penalties that the site has suffered. It also offers several tools that allow you to contact them regarding any problems that arise on the site.
Benefits of Google Search Console
Adding a website and verifying
You’ll need to add and verify ownership of the site before you can do anything else. Adding and verifying a site in Search Console proves to Google that you are either the owner of the site, a webmaster, or another authorized user. Enter the URL of the site you are trying to add by selecting the “Add property” field. You will then be asked to verify your site. There are a few different ways you can achieve this.
Uploading the HTML file. To use this method, you need to be able to upload files to the root file of the site. In the Search Console dashboard, select “Manage site” and then “Verify this site“. If “HTML file upload” is not listed in the “Recommended verification method“, then it is definitely listed in the “Other verification methods” tab. When you select this method, you will be prompted to download the HTML file. Download it and then save it to the specified location. Do not make any changes to the content or to the file name. If something changes, Search Console won’t be able to check and verify the site. After loading the HTML file, go back to Search Console and click “Verify“. If everything is set up correctly, you’ll see a page letting you know that the site is verified. Once you’ve verified your site with this method, don’t delete the HTML file from your site.
Other methods of verifying a site are by using an HTML tag that you insert into the site, using a Google Analytics account, Google Tag Manager, or using the option Domain name provider. Google periodically checks whether the verification is valid (for example, checks whether the HTML verification tag is still present). If verification can no longer be verified, your permission for that site expires after a certain period of time. Data is collected for the site from the moment you first add it in Google Search Console.
Adding a Sitemap
By submitting a sitemap in Google Search Console , you make Google’s job easier by ensuring that they have all the necessary information needed to work with your site.
In the Search Console dashboard, select the site for which you want to submit a sitemap. On the left side you will see the “Sitemap” option, which opens the window in which you add the sitemap to the site.
Reporting errors from the site
Sometimes we may not realize that there is a problem on the site. Google Search Console will notify you immediately of any errors it finds on the site.
Selecting the “Coverage” option in the left menu in the control panel will open a window that will contain all the errors that Google has spotted on your site. It’s a very useful and important option. By clicking on one of the errors, you will receive a description of the error and further steps to be taken to eliminate the error.
Tell Google about your content
The quickest way for Google to index a page of a website is to manually submit it for indexing. This will allow the content of a particular page to appear in the search results as soon as possible. This option also allows us to report any changes to one of the pages to Google, so that it can index the changed and improved content as soon as possible.
By selecting the “URL inspection” option, a window opens in which we can enter the URL of one of the pages from the site and check its status, and if it is not indexed, we require Google to index as quickly as possible using the “Request Indexing” option located on the right side of the window.
